Feedburner subscriber statistics are pulled off every few hours and have a tendancy to go up and down a bit, this is not activate on all feeds.

  • How often are the feeds updated? The feed which has gone the longest without being updated is checked every minute and the article text stored. When you request a feed, the feed will be at most 10 minutes behind those available on the BBC website, articles which only have the summary are either very recent and the server has not dealt with them or there was a problem processing them and so you are given the original summary instead. It can in theory take up to 24 minutes for articles to be processed although its often quicker.
  • Why are statistics not enabled on all feeds/how many subscribers are there? Subscriber information comes from Feedburner for feeds which are redirected via their servers, I have thought about producing meaningful stats for the rest but have little motivation/time for this. Traffic to this server is in the region of 60k hits a month including requests from feedburner.
  • The RSS Feed items contain links which are not present in the original articles, whats going on? BBC Blog posts commonly contain links within the article text to other websites, however BBC News puts these separately under 'Related Internet Links', if the server finds a direct match for the text given in this section then a link should be inserted (once per item). The code which does this is by design very picky about doing this, so in most cases not all links and sometimes none will be inserted. This attempts to add the context which is present on the original story.
  • Some of the article looks funny/there is garbled text, why? BBC articles contain a variety of special content such as slideshows which rely on javascript for their appearence, the script strips some of these and reformats others but doesnt catch all of them. The scrape template is tweaked from time to time to improve the return rates.
  • Is this affiliated with the BBC? No! As stated at the top of the page this is not in any way affiliated with the BBC, if I receive a complaint from the BBC it'll be shutdown or altered to comply.
  • I'm getting an error 403 when trying to get feeds from your site, why? This happens when the server believes you are not respecting the terms of the BBC's conditions of use and publishing full BBC articles alongside adverts on a website, forum etc, as a result you have been added to a blacklist. I don't intend to be a gatekeeper for BBC content however if I can prevent this as much as possible I will with the added bonus for me of reducing unwanted traffic to this site. Please contact me if you believe this is in error or are doing a mashup or similar which is being blocked.

If you make repeated requests for the same feed without respecting either the last modified or etags then you are likely to be permenantly blocked.
  • Can you add a particular BBC feed? Yes in theory, contact me and I'll have a look.
